EPUB to TXT: keep the words, drop the layout

EPUB to TXT removes images, the table of contents, and styling, and leaves plain text you can copy. When DOCX is the better export, and the online steps.

EPUB to TXT reduces an ebook to plain text. Images, fonts, a clickable contents list, and styling go away. What remains is text you can copy, search, and edit. If you still want to read it as an ebook, do not do this.

For print or a paged attachment, see EPUB to PDF. To turn TXT back into an ebook, see Word and TXT to EPUB.

When is TXT the right file?

  • You are quoting, or collecting text from several books into notes.
  • A script or a search tool only accepts plain text.
  • You need the words, and you do not care how they were set.

When it is not:

  • You still want pictures and a contents list in a reader. Keep the EPUB.
  • You will edit in Word and want paragraphs and images. Open DOCX converter. DOCX is the default output there. It is not the original design, but it keeps more than TXT.
  • The EPUB was made from a scanned PDF. There may have been no text to extract, and the TXT will be nearly empty.

How do you convert it here?

  1. Open TXT converter. TXT is already the output.
  2. Drop the EPUB. The limit is 50MB.
  3. Start conversion and keep the page open. Extracting text is usually faster than building a PDF.
  4. Open the download as UTF-8. Do not decide the conversion failed from an old editor that guessed the encoding wrong.

A DRM-locked EPUB cannot be converted, because the text is unreadable. A personal EPUB that does convert often separates chapters with blank lines. Those blank lines are not a new table of contents.

Can converting the TXT back restore the design?

The TXT no longer has heading levels or images. Turning it into EPUB again produces one reflowable text, not the old contents. If you need the layout, go back to the original EPUB. Do not rebuild it from this TXT.

Common questions

Do chapter titles remain after EPUB to TXT?

The title words usually remain, but they are no longer a table of contents and they do not jump anywhere. TXT has no hierarchy. A reader will not treat them as ebook chapters.

I want bold text and images. Is TXT the right output?

No. For an editable file that still has paragraphs and images, choose DOCX. TXT keeps characters. Images are gone.

The TXT looks garbled.?

Open it as UTF-8. If an editor guesses the wrong encoding, Chinese or other non-Latin text turns into garbage. Try an editor that lets you select UTF-8 before you treat the conversion as failed.
