EPUB to PDF: when to freeze the layout

EPUB to PDF turns a reflowable ebook into fixed pages for print and sharing. You cannot set paper size on this page. When not to convert, and the online steps.

EPUB to PDF deliberately gives up reflow. An EPUB changes type size and line breaks with the screen. A PDF freezes one pagination so you can print it, forward it, or open it somewhere that does not read EPUB. Afterward, do not expect it to flow like an ebook on a phone.

If you have a PDF and want a reflowable ebook, that is PDF to EPUB. That direction is the one that scrambles columns, because the converter has to guess the reading order.

When is it worth converting?

  • You need to print, or a form only accepts PDF.
  • You will annotate by page on a computer, not with an ebook highlighter.
  • "Readable" is enough. You do not need A4, a running header, or exact page numbers.

When it is not:

  • You will read it on a phone or an e-reader. Keep the EPUB.
  • You will Send to Kindle. Send the EPUB, not a large PDF made from it.
  • You need to edit the words. Use EPUB to TXT, or set the output to DOCX in ebook converter.

How do you convert it here?

  1. Open PDF converter. PDF is already the output.
  2. Drop the EPUB. The limit is 50MB. A book with many images grows quickly and may hit that cap.
  3. Start conversion and stay on the page. Building fixed pages is slower than a text-to-text conversion.
  4. Open the PDF and turn a few pages. Check that a heading was not left stranded at the bottom of a page.

You cannot choose the paper size before conversion. The default page is fine for screen reading and ordinary printing. It is not a publisher's layout file.

What becomes fixed?

Paragraphs wrap to the default width. A chapter that was one scrolling EPUB becomes many pages. An existing table of contents often becomes PDF bookmarks or links at the front, not an editable Word-style field. Images stay near their paragraphs. Tight text wrap around a figure may stack instead.

A DRM-locked EPUB cannot be converted either.

Common questions

Why won't the PDF reflow on my phone?

PDF freezes the line breaks and page breaks from the conversion. Zooming enlarges the page. It does not rewrap paragraphs the way EPUB does. That is the point of this conversion.

Can I pick the paper size and margins?

Not on this page. The PDF uses the converter's default page. For a precise print layout, make the PDF in a layout app instead of converting an EPUB.

I only want to copy the text. Should I make a PDF?

No. TXT or DOCX is the better export for copying and editing. PDF is for reading and printing.
