PDF to EPUB: when the layout breaks
What happens to text when a PDF becomes EPUB, why scanned PDFs stay unsearchable, and when you should keep the PDF.
A PDF is a fixed page. An EPUB reflows with the screen. Turning one into the other is not a rename. The converter has to guess the order in which the text should be read. When the guess is right, a phone becomes much easier to read. When it is wrong, columns, footnotes, and headers collapse into one stream.
Which PDFs are worth converting?
Convert a PDF that already has a text layer: exported from Word, a layout app, or a browser, where you can select and copy the body. As EPUB, the type size can grow in the reader, which is what you want for a long read on a phone.
Keep the PDF when the page itself matters: papers with page numbers, contracts, slide exports, art books. Kindle can open those PDFs directly. It will not turn a page into flowing paragraphs.
Use PDF converter. If you have not chosen a target yet, ebook converter lets you pick EPUB, AZW3, or MOBI. How those three differ is in EPUB vs MOBI vs AZW3.
What do you usually lose?
- Columns. Papers and magazines often use two. The converter may finish the left column first, or interleave lines by visual position. Footnotes end up in the body.
- Headers, footers, and page numbers. They repeat on every PDF page. In EPUB they may show up as a junk line on every screen, or they may be dropped.
- Exact line breaks. EPUB wraps to the screen width. End-of-line hyphenation from the PDF page does not stay.
- Complex tables and formulas. A simple table may survive. Nested tables, formula images, and floating figures often shift.
Novels, single-column manuals, and books that are mostly headings plus prose are worth converting. If the design is the content, do not convert.
Why are scans a different problem?
A PDF from a scanner or a phone camera is usually one image per page. Format conversion does not read the words in the picture. The EPUB is still a sequence of images: no search, no real text size, and often a larger file.
That file needs OCR before it can become an ebook. This converter does not recognize text in images. If the source was actually Word, convert the DOCX. Do not save it as PDF first. See Word and TXT to EPUB.
How should you send the result to Kindle?
If you only want to turn the pages on a Kindle, skip conversion and send the PDF.
If you want type that can grow and reflow, convert to EPUB and use Send to Kindle, or convert to AZW3 and copy it over USB. Those two paths are explained in which format to send to Kindle. Large files need the page left open until the download is ready. The limit is 50MB. A DRM-locked PDF cannot be converted either.
If the device is a very old Kindle and you do not want EPUB, see PDF to MOBI. To freeze an already reflowable EPUB onto fixed pages, see EPUB to PDF.
Common questions
Why is the layout a mess after PDF to EPUB?
A PDF pins text to a page. EPUB has to guess a reading order and reflow it. Columns, footnotes, headers, and text boxes often land in the wrong place or get glued into the body.
Can a scanned PDF become a searchable EPUB?
Not by format conversion alone. Scanned pages are pictures. The EPUB is still pictures: you cannot select the text or search it. That needs OCR first, then an ebook built from the recognized text.
Do I have to convert a PDF before reading it on Kindle?
No. Kindle opens PDF directly, but the page does not reflow, so type stays small. Convert to EPUB or AZW3 only when you want the text to resize with the screen.
