EPUB to AZW3: copy it onto a Kindle over USB

Convert EPUB to AZW3 when you sideload onto a newer Kindle with a cable. Send to Kindle does not need this: send the EPUB. What the contents keep, and the online steps.

To put an EPUB on a newer Kindle with a cable, convert it to AZW3. Many Kindles will not open an EPUB that arrived over USB. AZW3 (KF8) is the Kindle format for that copy, and it keeps the contents and images better than MOBI.

If you are using Send to Kindle, do not convert. Send the EPUB. The two paths are in what to send to Kindle.

Why is this conversion the steady one?

EPUB and AZW3 are both reflowable. Conversion swaps the container. It does not have to guess a reading order. So:

  • Chapters and an existing table of contents usually still match.
  • Inline images come across. A figure with a very complex float may move to after the paragraph.
  • Custom fonts are usually not embedded as-is. The reader uses its own.
  • Headers, page numbers, and fixed columns do not survive. A Kindle reflows to the screen.

That is different from PDF to EPUB. A PDF is a fixed page, and reflow often scrambles it. EPUB to AZW3 rarely shuffles whole chapters.

How do you convert it here?

  1. Open AZW3 converter. AZW3 is already the output.
  2. Drop the EPUB. The limit is 50MB. A DRM-locked file fails, and that is not a format mistake.
  3. Start conversion and stay until the download is ready.
  4. Copy the AZW3 into the Kindle documents folder with a cable. Do not attach the AZW3 to Send to Kindle. That path wants EPUB.

If the device is too old for AZW3, then consider EPUB to MOBI. When you leave Kindle, use AZW3 to EPUB.

What should you check on the device?

Open the contents and jump to the first chapter and the last. If both land in the body, the file is usable. A blank cover page usually means the EPUB had no separate cover, which does not block reading.

Common questions

EPUB to AZW3 or EPUB to MOBI?

For a USB copy onto a newer Kindle, choose AZW3. MOBI is only for a very old device that cannot open AZW3. AZW3 keeps the contents, images, and basic styles more faithfully.

Do I convert to AZW3 before Send to Kindle?

No. That service accepts EPUB and converts again on Amazon's side. An AZW3 you make yourself is for the USB copy.

The fonts changed. Did it fail?

No. Kindle draws the body in its own fonts. If the headings, images, and chapters are still there, the conversion worked.
