AZW3 to EPUB: read it after you leave Kindle

Convert a personal AZW3 document to EPUB for Apple Books, Kobo, and other readers. Store books with DRM cannot be converted. Steps and what to check in the contents.

AZW3 to EPUB takes a personal Kindle document to other readers. Kobo, Apple Books, and most phone apps do not open AZW3. AZW3 is already reflowable, so the result is usually cleaner than a conversion that started as PDF.

If the name ends in .azw rather than .azw3, read AZW to EPUB. An old .mobi is MOBI to EPUB.

Which AZW3 files convert?

Personal files without encryption do: something you copied on with USB, an AZW3 you made from EPUB, or a document you converted yourself.

These do not:

  • A Kindle store download with DRM. This site cannot remove it.
  • KFX, the newer Kindle package. It is not supported. Renaming it to AZW3 does not make it convertible.

How do you convert it here?

  1. Open EPUB converter.
  2. Drop the AZW3. The limit is 50MB.
  3. Start conversion and keep the page open.
  4. Download the EPUB and import it into the reader you will actually use.

Why keep the EPUB as the master?

EPUB is the right file to convert onward to PDF, AZW3, or TXT. You can keep the AZW3 as the Kindle copy, but do not keep only the AZW3. A Kindle-only library has to be converted again when you change readers, and an encrypted purchase can never be converted.

Common questions

Is AZW3 to EPUB the same as AZW to EPUB?

No. AZW3 is KF8 and keeps more styling. AZW is an older package. Convert the extension you actually have. Renaming the file does not change the container.

Can a Kindle store AZW3 become EPUB?

Not if it is DRM-locked. The converter cannot read the text. Personal documents and AZW3 files you converted yourself can.

The EPUB has no table of contents.?

Check that the AZW3 had a clickable contents list. If it did, it usually remains. A file that only has visual chapter titles, with no contents data, does not grow a reliable contents list during conversion.
