AZW to EPUB: not the same file as AZW3 or KFX
AZW is an older Kindle package, not AZW3 and not KFX. Which AZW files can become EPUB, why store books fail, and the online steps.
AZW is not a short name for AZW3. A .azw file is usually an older Kindle package, often an old Mobipocket structure inside. .azw3 is the later KF8 format. .kfx is newer and is not supported here. Calling all three "Kindle format" makes a failed conversion hard to explain.
A personal AZW without encryption can become EPUB for Apple Books, Kobo, and other readers. An encrypted store purchase cannot.

A book downloaded from the Kindle app is usually DRM-locked. The .azw extension does not make it convertible. This site cannot remove DRM.
How do you convert it here?
- Open EPUB converter. EPUB is already the output. AZW converter is the other door; change its output to EPUB if you start there.
- Drop the AZW. The limit is 50MB.
- Start conversion and stay on the page.
- Download the EPUB. To copy it back over USB, do not copy the EPUB. Follow what to send to Kindle and make an AZW3 instead.
If a small file fails, suspect encryption or KFX before you run the same file again.
Is a simple contents list normal?
Older AZW files often have no multi-level contents. Chapters without sections mean the source was like that. If the text and images are there, the EPUB is usable. For richer styling, find the original EPUB or DOCX. Converting this AZW repeatedly will not create it.
Common questions
Can I rename AZW to AZW3 and then convert?
No. The extension is only the file name. AZW, AZW3, and KFX are different inside. Renaming does not change what the converter reads.
AZW to EPUB failed. Is the file too big?
Over 50MB is rejected at upload. The more common failure is DRM: a store AZW is encrypted, so there is no text to read. If it is a personal file, check that it is not KFX.
The EPUB will not open when I copy it back to the Kindle.?
Many Kindles do not open EPUB over USB. Convert that EPUB to AZW3 for the cable. Send to Kindle can take the EPUB directly.
