Tool input and output
URL encoding use cases
URL encoding (percent-encoding) converts characters that cannot safely appear in an address bar — such as Chinese, spaces, &, = and # — into %XX form, so browsers and servers parse URL parameters correctly without mojibake or truncated arguments.
This tool encodes Chinese, Japanese, emoji and special symbols. Its rules match JavaScript's encodeURIComponent, making it handy for development, API integration and sharing parameterized links.
Which standard defines percent-encoding?
URL encoding writes a byte that cannot appear as-is as a percent sign plus two hexadecimal digits. That rule is in RFC 3986. It is not encryption.
“A percent-encoding mechanism is used to represent a data octet in a component when that octet's corresponding character is outside the allowed set or is being used as a delimiter of, or within, the component.”
Frequently Asked Questions
How is a space encoded?
This tool encodes a space as %20, following the standard behavior of encodeURIComponent. You may also see + in form (application/x-www-form-urlencoded) contexts; the two are not the same.
Can URL encoding and decoding be converted back?
Yes. Encoding turns special characters into %XX and decoding reverses the process. They are inverse operations, useful for verifying that parameters survive transmission.
Why not send the raw Chinese link directly?
Browsers encode addresses automatically when submitting requests, but manually assembled parameters are ambiguous (e.g. & or #). Encoding first guarantees consistent parsing everywhere.
